From Novel to Song: Bookshop Band delights at St Giles

On a beautiful summer’s evening we were treated to a wonderful concert by Beth Porter and Ben Please who run an independent bookshop in Wigtown.  They have combined their love of books with a talent for writing songs and produced the acclaimed Bookshop Band.  The concert opened with a song comprised of opening lines of novels, which we were invited to guess.  Six out of eight was not bad..  Over the years the band has been asked to write commissions which they they perform at book launches, so we heard songs of Philip Pulman’s Book of Dust, Bring up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel as well as classic works such as Alice in Wonderland.  The evening ended with our own Paul Walton, local creative writer, joining the band to sing his own composition.  Our thanks go to Paul for sponsoring the evening and for all his generosity to St Giles.  Thanks also to Charles and Julie Gurden who were on the door and to Chris and Margaret Drew for organising and serving the refreshment.

As we came out of the church, the most amazing purple sunset ended a very special evening.
